In today's global economy where many transactions are done through a computer with credit cards instead of face to face with cash in hand, it is essential that consumers continuously monitor their credit score. The advent of identity theft and other related crimes have made monitoring one's credit score of paramount importance.

Everyone has seen the commercials and advertisements stating that they can get their credit reports for free with just a few clicks of a mouse. The process seems so easy on television, simply call or log-on to a website and in an instant you can have your credit score in hand. However, beware that those offers are not everything that they claim to be.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires the three consumer reporting companies – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion – to provide consumers with a free annual copy of their credit score. The three companies have consolidated their efforts into one authorized website to allow consumers to effectively and efficiently manage their credit: www.annualcreditreport.com.

Other companies have created websites that look like the official www.annualcreditreport.

com, while others use domain names that have common misspellings of www.annualcreditreport.com. These companies claim to offer free reports or scores, but often times these incentives are laden with hidden fees. Some sites offer services that are "free" but the service converts to a program in which the consumer must pay once the initial trial period ends. If consumers fail to cancel the service during the trial period, they may be agreeing to fees that will be assessed to their credit cards. Other sites try to sell consumers services, while others try to collect personal information that can be sold to other companies.

(WOMENSENEWS)-At a certain point in the days after the Penn State sexual abuse scandal blew up in the media, I reached my breaking point with all the shock and disbelief about how such things could happen in "Happy Valley."

I am a Penn State alumnus.

One thing going to Penn State taught me was that any institution of learning willing to concede its entire identity to its sports teams has dropped the ball and missed the goal. Curiosity, openness, skepticism, criticism are all basics of intellectual life but these values run contrary to being a football powerhouse school, where domination and celebration of the status quo are rewarded. I learned and experienced this lesson very well at Penn State.

TORONTO, Nov. 17, 2011 /CNW/ -The RBC After-School Grants Project announced that 99 community-based organizations across Canada will share $2.6 million in funding to provide after-school programs, including 15 new grant recipients. RBC has been supporting after-school programs since 1999, helping provide children with a safe, supervised environment for activities outside the classroom.

"Having funded 227 after-school programs since 1999, we know that children who participate in these programs have enhanced social skills and show increased motivation to excel in school," said Shari Austin , vice-president, Corporate Citizenship at RBC. "We are very proud that our grants continue to help community-based organizations provide engaging activities that keep kids safe, inspire them to learn and grow, while alleviating some pressures for working families."

RBC After-School Grant recipients represent a diverse range of community based organizations, and were chosen by members of the community. Each program will receive up to $40,000 from RBC. There are 15 first-time grant recipients, including:

BRITISH COLUMBIA

Chilliwack Central Elementary School - A grant of $40,000 will help this downtown school provide a free after-school program to about 50 children, five days a week. Children can get help with homework, enjoy daily story time, visit the local library, participate in a formal fitness program, and receive art instruction.

Millions of Americans deal with the process of getting a new car (or a new used car) every year. A few folks who are well off can plop down the cash with no concern about loans or interest rates.
