A parish-government spokesman said officials are monitoring the fire but do not feel it is a major public hazard or a threat to homes.

The fire is in the Salvador Wildlife Management Area, a remote area between Bayou Gauche and Lake Cataouatche.

A series of free courses that teaches participants how to start a small business is set to start Jan. 24.

The class is offered through Catholic Charities of Houma-Thibodaux and is one evening a week for two months.

The United Way for South Louisiana is raffling two tickets to the Jan. 9 BCS Championship match between LSU and Alabama in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Local nonprofits and communities still have time to apply for a grant to battle obesity.

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation has set a Jan. 13 deadline for organizations and communities to submit letters of intent to apply for up to $10 million in matching grant funds for programs that promote healthy eating and active living.

Nominations are still being accepted for The Courier's Most Useful Citizen award.

Nominees should be people who have gone above and beyond to make a difference in the community.
