Become Eco-Informed

People assume there is only one way to supply power to their homes but this assumption couldn't be any further from reality.

This is how most of the population obtains its power supply.

Electricity is created at the Power Plant

After creation it is then sent to a transmission substation

Then through high voltage transmission lines

Next to a power substation where it is dispersed according to the power grid

Its then sent through a transformer and power poles you see outside

Finally it arrives at the transformer drum on the pole just outside you home

As you can see, this is a very long process. It also is filled with disadvantages.

Disadvantages such as:

1. Above all, this process isn't clean! Power Plants burn fossil fuels like coal or petroleum.

2. Power Plants that burn coal cause Acid Rain and a portion of Global Warming.

3. Power outages can leave you helpless at any time without warning.

4. Nuclear Power generates radiation, which can be harmful or even fatal to infected people.

5. Nuclear waste dumps can spontaneously combust without warning.

6. A nuclear meltdown can often occur which will release massive amounts of radiation into the community.

7. It's Expensive!

So there has to be some advantages to obtaining power this way, right?

The only advantage to getting your electricity this way is you don't have to do any physical work yourself. That's virtually the only advantage to mention, no other gains to speak of.

This is the way the world has been running for years and it has been working fine until we recently realized something.

In 1850 or so the Earth has been exposed to far more carbon dioxide than in the past. This is not just due to volcanic eruptions or the increase of population but the large amount of emissions from power plants and automobiles.

The Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions have become detrimental to the earth, so much in fact that we have been speeding up its life. Imagine it is your 22nd birthday and your mother brings out a cake that says you just turned 25. How would you feel? This is similar to what we are doing to our planet.

These carbon emissions are still being released as we speak and will not be stopped over night. The government is not going to shut off the power because this would cause mass hysteria. They are also not going to cut everyone's electrical usage either.

So what other options do we have?

There is always the choice of getting rid of anything you own that uses electricity, but that probably won't happen because we depend on those things to dam much.

The other option is something more practical.

Create your own energy. I am not suggesting you open up a power plant; all I'm saying is that there are renewable energy sources out there that you can use over and over after harnessing once.

Renewable Energy Sources:

Solar Energy

Wind Power

Magnetic Energy

Geothermal Energy

The most popular of these is Solar Energy.

Solar Energy uses photovoltaic's, which is a process that converts solar radiation into energy, and heat engines to create electricity. This is a form of renewable energy because all of its power comes from the sun. There is no other outside source.

The government has been setting up solar panel sites that stretch miles across the earth to provide power to entire factories, but you would only need a few solar panels to power your home.

The government also is giving tax breaks up to 30% for people who have these systems installed. Here is an excerpt taken directly from the

" U.S. Department of Energy "

" RESIDENTIAL RENEWABLE ENERGY TAX CREDITS

Consumers who install solar energy systems (including solar water heating and solar electric systems), small wind systems, geothermal heat pumps, and residential fuel cell and micro turbine systems can receive a 30% tax credit for systems placed in service before December 31, 2016; the previous tax credit cap no longer applies."

This proves that the U.S. government intends to reward people for doing the right thing .

In these tough economical times who has enough money to buy and install a solar panel system. Maybe the rich lawyer who lives in the corner house down the block with the ceramic tiles out front. But for the average working class individual it's not that easy.
