HACKERS have got hold of files on people who have contacted a council for debt help.

Edinburgh City Council have reported the "malicious cyber attack" to police and said that no other council systems are affected.

A spokesman said steps had been taken to protect people who may be affected.

Fraud prevention service CIFAS will contact 270 financial groups, who will check the details aren’t misused.

The council have written to people affected to apologise, but said there is no evidence personal details had been used.

They said: "This is a serious crime that could have potentially damaging consequences."

Concerned residents can phone a council hotline on: 0131 529 2180.
