The former BART police officer convicted in the shooting death of Oscar Grant will be back in court today.

Johannes Mehserle's faces a civil trial in a case unrelated to Grant's death. A man is suing Mehserle and four other BART officers for allegedly using excessive force at the Oakland Coliseum station back in 2008.

According to the Examiner lawyers for BART said Ken Carrethers "verbally threatened" the officers and resisted arrest. The incident happened about six weeks before Mehserle shot and killed unarmed passenger Oscar Grant at the Fruitvale BART station.

Rogersville Police, along with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office and the FBI have made an arrest in two recent crimes. One was a burglary at Easy Money Pawn Shop in Rogersville and the other was an armed robbery at Greenhill First Metro Bank.

Rogersville Police Chief Terry Holden says the three law enforcement agencies arrested Anthony Cruz Collins, 18, early Friday morning during a traffic stop. More arrests are expected.

The burglary at Easy Money Pawn Shop happened November 25. Rogersville Police say two men were caught on camera stealing 13 guns, including several high-powered rifles.

Then, on November 29, two masked gunmen were caught on video robbing Greenhill First Metro Bank. They fired shots inside the bank, but no one was hurt.

Detectives studied surveillance video from both the pawn shop and bank because the weapons used during the bank holdup appear to resemble the guns stolen from the pawn shop.

CHARLOTTE (AP) - Carolina president Danny Morrison says the organization is considering renovating 16-year-old Bank of America Stadium.

Although no nothing is imminent, the Panthers have chosen the same architectural firm that helped design the stadium to lead a year-long study on possible improvements.

Morrison says the organization is just beginning the study. He says it's "a process and right now and we are taking the first steps in that process." Morrison says every stadium "is unique and we want to see what fits best with ours in the coming years."

There's no timetable or cost estimate for the project, and nothing will be determined until the study is completed. Populous, previously known as HOK Sports Facilities Group, designed the stadium that was completed in 1996 and will spearhead the study. 本文出自 Mr.J ....

In response to a possible change to Pell Grant eligibility, the Associated Students Inc. Senate has passed a resolution opposing any such changes to the program.

The California State Student Association ( CSSA ) sent student representatives to Washington, D.C. from Oct. 24 to 28, to lobby for the preservation of the current Pell Grant eligibility system.

According to a press release from the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, the Department of Education was funded $69 billion, forcing the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and related agencies to make cuts to some programs for the 2012 funding draft.

The current maximum Pell Grant award of $5,550 will not be cut, according to Michael Quibuyen , Cal State Long Beach ASI treasurer.

However, the congressional deficit reduction supercommittee considered restricting eligibility for Pell Grants from 18 semesters to 12 semesters and eliminating students who are taking less than six units a semester, Quibuyen said.

Sen. Chuck Schumer urged stores and shoppers to protect themselves from fraudsters who are draining gift cards' balance once they're activated.

"The system all too many stores use now is a free buffet for scammers and crooks that can leave unsuspecting victims with a valueless piece of plastic by Christmas Day," Schumer said Sunday.

Gift card fraudsters go to retail and drug stores - where gift cards are on the shelves - and record gift card access code concealed by cardboard or a scratch off film.

They track it online and, once it's activated, deplete it before the consumer uses it.

"Can you imagine, getting a nice gift card, $50 from Macy's, and you go to use it and it's been used up already by some scammer?" Schumer asked.
