The second annual Country Cracker Feast, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Plant City Day Break, was at the home of George and Cassandra Banning. Besides the meal, there was also entertainment by the Dreadful Snakes, an auction and more.

The money will go to such charities as Rotary Camp Florida, a Brandon camp for physically and mentally challenged youth; S4TL, a seminar for incoming high school seniors; college scholarships for high school seniors; and dictionaries for area fourth-graders.

The country cracker menu featured gator, fish, gumbo, jambalaya and more. A silent and live auction featured a large variety of items from tickets to Universal Studios to photography sessions to racing memorabilia. The most popular items were a ride in state Rep. Rich Glorioso's airplane and the opportunity to have Mayor Dan Raulerson mow the winning bidder's lawn.

During the event, Unity in the Community took the opportunity to present a $30,000 donation to the United Food Bank of Plant City.

Car dealer Steve Hurley, president of Unity in the Community board of directors, presented the check to Carole Wright, president of the food bank.

Former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle and four others were cleared by a federal jury on Thursday of using excessive force during a 2008 confrontation with an Oakland man, sparing the transit agency from a costly payout.

Kenneth Carrethers alleged that Mehserle and four other BART police officers unlawfully hog-tied, kicked and punched him after he confronted them verbally at the Oakland Coliseum BART station. The incident occurred about six weeks before Mehserle shot and killed Oscar Grant III, an unarmed passenger, on Jan. 1, 2009.

The seven-person jury deliberated for about six hours over two days before delivering its verdict in the civil case at the U.S. District Court in San Francisco. When the verdict was read, Carrethers slumped and shook his head. Mehserle and the four other defendants later hugged each other and their lawyer, Dale Allen.

Carrethers' lawyer, Christopher Dolan, said his client was "terribly upset and disappointed" by the verdict.

Carrethers was visibly shaken while walking the hallways of the federal courthouse, saying loudly that, "This isn't over yet."

Prestige Holdings Limited, the local franchise holder of KFC, Pizza Hut and TGI Friday, yesterday announced that it had agreed to purchase 100 per cent of the Subway Restaurant business and related assets from Main Stream Foods Limited for the sum of $110 million. Prestige Holdings, which is a publicly listed company, said that it will finance the acquisition by accessing an unsecured loan of $65 million at 7.5 per cent from Victor E Mouttet Ltd, its parent company, and that it would receive an interest-free loan of $45 million from the seller of the Subway Restaurant business, Main Stream Foods Limited, to be repaid 18 months from close of the transaction.

This means that 41 per cent of the purchase price will come by way of the interest-free loan from Main Stream Foods Limited, which was established in October 1997 and currently owns and operates 40 Subway restaurants throughout Trinidad Tobago. In a news release that was submitted to the TT Stock Exchange, Prestige Holdings said: "The purchase consideration of $110 million will be financed by an unsecured loan of $65 million bearing a fixed interest rate of 7.5 per cent on the principal balance," from Victor E Mouttet Limited, the parent company of Prestige Holdings. Prestige will repay $5 million of the $65 million debt in each of the succeeding three years, according to the statement.

Victor E Mouttet’s $65 million loan "is convertible to common shares at PHL’s option, through a Right’s Issue of up to $50 million. As soon as it is practicable, PHL will review the Group’s combined capital structure, to determine the optimal debt to equity ratio, and take appropriate action on its capitalisation." Prestige Holdings said that the acquisition is estimated to provide an increase in earnings per share on a standalone basis, and improving as the restaurant holding company "implements synergies and takes advantage of the Subway Brand’s continued growth and development in Trinidad Tobago." It is estimated that the transaction would add approximately $170 million to the sales of Prestige Holdings, in the company’s financial year 2012 while adding $12.7 million to its net after tax profit, before factoring in interest cost on the acquisition financing.

"These estimates do not include new store growth and synergies from PHL’s existing operations of sixty-five (65) KFC, Pizza Hut and TGI Friday’s restaurants in Trinidad Tobago," according to the restaurant holding company. Meanwhile, Prestige Holdings chairman Joseph Esau issued another statement in which he said that the company was in discussions with three possible purchasers of its 50 per cent stake in a HFC joint venture in the Dominican Republic. "The carrying value of this investment is $29.5 million, and we expect a significant impairment of our investment; as a result the Board agreed that an appropriate provision will be made in PHL's financial statements for the year ending 30 November 2011" said Esau of the Dominican company which operates 12 KFC and two TGI Friday restaurants.本文出自 Mr.J ....

Thus it was this past Monday when all five Fairhope schools received visits again this year, as a bright white van loaned from Terry Thompson Chevrolet that served as the official Prize Patrol vehicle, made the rounds of Fairhope Elementary, J. Larry Newton, Fairhope Intermediate, Fairhope Middle and Fairhope High schools.

"Looks of surprise and shrieks of glee greeted the group," said Cori Yonge, FEEF's new executive director. "It was a happy and exciting day."

Teachers at the five schools received 13 grant awards for equipment and projects, including iPads, sophisticated microscopes, and an innovative creative writing program.

All told, FEEF, the nonprofit group that provides funding and other support to local schools, distributed $42,540 in funding this week. The grants were chosen by a committee of seven FEEF board members, Yonge said.

Teachers were asked to think big in their grant applications this year, said Sherri Williams, grants chairperson.

THE rising payroll costs are forcing banks to introduce new products that provide convenience and safety to depositors while attracting more of their money to their vaults.

The banking system calls an old system debit card. It is all over the world and threatening credit cards.

It is really relatively new in the Philippines, according to Allan Tumbaga, head of corporate communications of East-West Bank of the Gotianun family.

He said in an exclusive interview with Malaya Business Insight that debit cards are the "in thing" in the United States and steadily growing in the European Union, in fact all over the world.

Debit cards were available in the Philippine market since 1999 but, Tumbaga said only East West, Rizal Commercial Banking and Metrobank are actively pursuing it. East West is authorized to issue Visa Debit cards, said Tumbaga.

Last-minute filers can register for help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and U.S. Small Business Administration online or by phone, and can get help completing applications at local recovery centers.

Disaster assistance to individuals includes grants to help pay for temporary housing needs, home repairs and other expenses not covered by insurance. Low-interest loans from the SBA are also available for homeowners, renters and business owners to repair or replace property damaged in the hurricane.

Since the disaster declaration Aug. 31, FEMA has approved more than 87,000 registrations for assistance totaling $319 million, said Phyllis Deroian, external affairs officer for FEMA.

The SBA has also awarded more than $88 million in low-interest disaster loans. Here’s how to register:

In a national survey of its current clients actively considering or navigating through the foreclosure process, YouWalkAway.com revealed that 35 percent of those surveyed indicated that the Mortgage Debt Relief Act expiration date of December 31, 2012 contributed to their decisions to walk away sooner rather than later from their property.

The Mortgage Debt Relief Act relieves former homeowners of their obligation to pay taxes on the difference between their loan amount and the amount their property fetches through short sale or at auction after foreclosure. The foreclosure process takes, on average, one year from start to finish.

"The survey results are not surprising; YouWalkAway.com has seen a number of homeowners reach out to us due to the impending 2012 deadline," reports Jon Maddux, CEO of YouWalkAway.com. "Many are deciding to begin the foreclosure process sooner rather than later in order to ensure their foreclosure is complete by the end of 2012."

To avoid a large tax hit and protect his family through the Debt Relief Act of 2007, YouWalkAway.com client Robert Applebee of Homestead, Fla. began the strategic foreclosure process in June 2010. He has an $184,000 mortgage from Bank of America on a home that in July 2011 was appraised at $49,900. Most recently, Bank of America refused a $55,000 short sale offer on Applebee's home. If Applebee's property were to fetch $75,000 at auction, he would have to add $109,000 to his net income and pay income taxes based on this amount if his foreclosure process is not completed by the end of 2012 and the Mortgage Debt Relief Act is not extended.
