Besides meeting Santa himself in Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, a visit to his post office at the Santa Claus Village is a must.

At the main post office at the village you can see Santa's desk and all the letters that he receives from all over the world - Santa gets more letters than anyone else.

On the blackboard behind his desk it says that each Christmas Santa receives more than 700,000 letters.

Due to the volume of correspondence, Santa employs elves to help him. So far the elves have found that Santa has received letters from nearly 190 countries.

Most letters come from the UK, Japan and Poland, but Santa has also been getting letters in recent years from China, South Korea, Argentina and many other places.

At the post office you can send off a letter that is stamped with a special Arctic Circle postmark. You can also order postcards that will be sent to you or a friend by Santa just before Christmas.

Just outside the post office you can have your photo taken standing on the thick white painted line that marks the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle is a line visible on the map, north of which the sun can be seen above the horizon even at midnight during summertime.

WRITE TO SANTA: If you can't visit Santa then send a letter using this address: Santa Claus, Santa Claus Main Post Office, FI 96930, Arctic Circle.

TOP FIVE EXPERIENCES IN FINNISH LAPLAND

1. See the northern lights

According to NASA, this winter is set to be the best for catching the northern lights for 50 years. In Rovaniemi the northern lights (aurora borealis) can be seen on average every third clear night from October until March.

2. Experience the midnight sun

The period of the midnight sun in Rovaniemi (when the sun shines all night) is from June 6 to July 7. You can admire this phenomenon every night if it's not cloudy.

3. Pat reindeer

There are more reindeer than people in Finnish Lapland. It's possible to see them in the wild, but the easiest way to spot them is to join one of the many nature trips on offer in Rovaniemi.

4. Eat local cuisine

Try local cuisine such as whitefish, moose and reindeer at one of the restaurants in Rovaniemi (such as Lapland Hotel, Sky Ounasvaara or Restaurant Gaissa at Hotel Santa Claus).

5. Cuddle a polar bear
