Last-minute filers can register for help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and U.S. Small Business Administration online or by phone, and can get help completing applications at local recovery centers.
Disaster assistance to individuals includes grants to help pay for temporary housing needs, home repairs and other expenses not covered by insurance. Low-interest loans from the SBA are also available for homeowners, renters and business owners to repair or replace property damaged in the hurricane.
Since the disaster declaration Aug. 31, FEMA has approved more than 87,000 registrations for assistance totaling $319 million, said Phyllis Deroian, external affairs officer for FEMA.
The SBA has also awarded more than $88 million in low-interest disaster loans. Here’s how to register:
* Go to disasterassistance.gov or fema.gov.
* Call FEMA toll-free at 800-621-3362, or (TTY) 800-462-7585 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Telephone lines are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and multilingual operators are available.
Residents who need help in the registration process can visit the FEMA recovery center at the Paterson Museum, 2 Market St., Paterson, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday. For help with loan applications, the New Jersey Small Business Development Center at Bergen Community College, 355 Main St. in Hackensack , will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday.
