Every year SlashGear puts together a gift guide that covers all the usual big ticket gadgets that people want for the holidays. It's a great guide . This year I had a tougher time than usual, not because vendors weren't willing to send over gadgets for me to test " oh, they were. It just seemed like this year I got a much worse percentage of products that just weren't good enough to recommend. To make this list, I had to suffer through bad streaming media boxes, terrible QWERTY remote controls, remote control helicopters that were not terribly controllable, clothing made with moisture-wicking technology that didn't work, useless car-finder gizmos, "revolutionary" earbuds that aren't, unique speaker systems that sound awful, and an extended battery system for portable game consoles whose installation can break the console itself. I nearly put the helicopter " Griffin's HeloTC " on the list anyway because sort-of-controlling a little helicopter via an iPhone is cool, and making family members scatter from a perpetually out-of-control helicopter can be great fun. I also received a slew of fitness-tracker gadgets, but haven't had the time to test them fully. Maybe I'll do a New Year's Resolution Gift Guide follow up.

Square, the other company that Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey runs, which offers a device anyone can plug into their smartphones to accept credit cards, has announced that 1 million merchants are now using Square.

According to Dorsey, only 8 million merchants in the U.S. even accept credit cards. That's some pretty good progress on Square's part.

Square is only available in the U.S. so far, so that million merchant milestone is pretty significant. On the company's website, it says:

We are beginning to look into other markets, though at the time we can't officially support banks, cards or merchants outside of the 50 United States and DC. There is no specific timeline for international availability, but rest assured that you'll be among the first to know when it does happen. This includes US territories such as Puerto Rico and Guam.

There are many legal ways to recover payment of debts, even in some dealers managed to avoid payments on time. The Lone Star College System is processing a "tsunami" offinancial aid requests this year.

College officials had processed 38,000 requests as of earlyDecember, LSCS Chancellor Richard Carpenter said, which is twice asmany as last year. That's partly from a jump in enrollment, saidJed Young, LSCS executive director of communications.

"First, with substantially more students attending Lone StarCollege over the past couple of years, it follows that the amountof financial aid requests would increase and that more studentswould receive assistance as a result," Young said.

For the 2010-11 school year, 26,472 of the 62,339 LSCS students(42 percent) received a combined $128 million in financial aid,such as federal grants, loans or work study; state grants or workstudy; or local scholarships. For fall 2011 alone, 25,341 of the75,680 LSCS students (34 students) have received a combined $78million. Spring semester figures are not yet final and have notbeen released.

"That accounts for the biggest part of the increase in financialaid " Lone Star College has more students enrolled," Young said. "Ithink there's going to be a substantial increase when we see thetotals."

Overall: "I'm proud of our guys. It was a back-and-forth type of game. We were executing well early, but we had a little spell where we had some unforced turnovers and they took advantage.
