Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking the support of the community for the Bridging the Doyle scholarship program.
With the temporary loss of the Doyle Scholarship, many students who deserve awards will not receive scholarship funds to attend SRJC. The college is seeking donations to fund scholarships for high school seniors to attend SRJC next fall.

For six decades, more than $76 million from the Frank P. Doyle Trust provided scholarships to over 120,000 SRJC students. Since 2008 when the Doyle fund was suspended, the Bridging the Doyle program has given 1,181 local high school students $545,650 in financial aid.

All contributions to the SRJC Foundation’s Bridging the Doyle fund go directly to high school students, and donations are tax deductible.

U.S. Non- Manufacturing Index Slightly Rose to 52.6%

The U.S. non-manufacturing PMI, an index that estimates the economic activity in the U.S. non-manufacturing sector, grew to 52.6% in December i.e. a 0.6 percent points gain. This may have been among the factors to help pull down the risk currencies against the U.S. dollar.

The number of people seeking help from free debt advice agencies has risen in the last year, a new survey shows.

Some 1.54 million people sought help in 2011, compared with 1.4 million the previous year, the study by the Money Advice Trust has shown.

Figures also show around 10 million individuals in the UK find themselves in a constant struggle to manage their debts, the charity found.

The survey, carried out by the University of Nottingham for the Money Advice Trust, is an update on previous work forecasting demand for debt advice in the UK.

The research predicts a sharp rise in the demand for debt advice in the first half of this year, mostly due to growing unemployment and modest wage growth.

In the world today it is almost impossible for parents to be able to afford college, especially if the child wants to go to an Ivy League college. "The district recognizes the critical role STEM education - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - plays in preparing students for the future," said Mary Margaret Hull, Swiftmud's lead communications coordinator, "With the help of the grant program, students will learn the importance of protecting and conserving Florida's water resources through STEM-based education projects."

The Polk County grants are:

Linda Hughes, Bartow Elementary Academy, will receive $1,435 for students to collect meteorological measurements to analyze the precipitation, evaporation and water needs of plants on the campus.

Jessica Fredricks, Bethune Academy, Haines City, will receive $3,000 for students who will work with civil engineers and biologists to create a map of Lake Boomerang and other habitats on or near the campus.

According to founder and CEO Mark Fischer, InspirePay's first and free payment product enables an individual or business to create a "Pay Me" page that aggregates all of the payment services they already use. These can include a merchant account, the Stripe payment system , and the familiar online payment services PayPal, Google Checkout and Dwolla. It can be described as an "About Me" page of payments, he says.

"Ideal uses include any situation where pricing varies, such as wholesale sales or services linked to an invoice," explains Fischer, who has been an online strategy consultant for the past twelve years, and has run the merchant services provider Inspire Commerce for more than four years. "People are already using it for more person to person situations as well, such as beer money, splitting a meal among friends, and even raising money for simple things like Christmas gifts for teachers where all of the parents are chipping in."

Users who create an InspirePay page can quickly request payment by sending a link, such as When the recipient clicks on the link, he or she pays, and the sender of the link receives their $50. If a seller or service provider leaves the dollar amount off the link, the payment page asks the person paying to specify a dollar amount.

Fischer says InspirePay's primary target market consists of individuals who want to be paid online but who don't want to depend on a shopping cart system. Credit Karma, a free credit education website, has just added credit monitoring to the list of services it offers to its registered users.

CreditKarma.com has offered free credit scores for a few years, and has now added free credit monitoring.

The service tracks credit reports provided by credit reporting agency TransUnion. That means if TransUnion gets a request for information regarding a new credit application or adds a negative item such as a late payment to a credit report, Credit Karma will send an email notification letting the individual know, said founder Kenneth Lin.

The service is available to the site's 4 million existing users, in addition to new users as they sign up. Users must opt-in by providing details such as a Social Security number and birth date to enable the service to track credit history.

Lin said the site does not share personal information with third parties. It uses several well-known security measures to protect users' data.

As the bills from holiday shopping start rolling in, officials are urging consumers to take the time to check annual credit reports to ensure the splurging was for their loved ones and not for the loved one of an identity thief.

A U.S. Department of Justice report recently released revealed that identity thieves are increasingly using personal information to rack up charging on existing credit cards of unsuspecting victims. According to the report, 8.6 million households had at least one member who experienced identity theft, compared to 6.4 million households in 2005. The report also revealed that victims lost an average of $5,650, compared to $2,800 in 2005.

"Part of the increase is because some feel that desperate times call for desperate measures in that some people turn to this crime just to keep their lights on," said Mike Prusinski, senior vice president of LifeLock, a national identity theft protection company. "I have heard from numerous law enforcement agents around the country talking about family members, taking advantage of family members and parents using the personal information of their children because they have fallen on hard times financially."

He said consumers should take a proactive approach to guarding their personal information against loved ones and criminals alike. Getting a paper shredder is an easy and affordable step that Prusinski said anyone can take.

"Shred everything," he said. "It used to be we just told people to shred financial documents, but now we need to shred everything because criminals have gotten so good at social engineering. They see an envelope from your bank, so they know what bank you use, then they go to public websites to find out even more information from tax returns, divorce agreements and mortgages, something of which could have your Social Security number, so then they go and apply for a loan or go into your bank and withdraw your money. It can happen that quickly, so people need to take steps now before it happens to them."
