High street (BSE: HIGHSTREE.BO - news ) banks offer some of the worst currency exchange rates for those looking to get their holiday money delivered at home, according to new research from the consumer group Which?

The banks offering the poorest deals were HSBC (LSE: HSBA.L - news ) and RBS (LSE: RBS.L - news ) /NatWest, while Halifax offered the most competitive rates for a high street bank. However, it was easily beaten by some of the online providers.

For those looking to switch 600 into dollars, the best deal was offered by ICE Home Delivery, with Travelex, FairFX and Tesco Travel Money offering rates that were almost as competitive. Here customers would receive almost $35 more once exchange rates and any fees and commission were taken into account than from HSBC.

Those planning a ski trip or winter sun breaks this Christmas are urged to shop around for the best currency deals. Consumers should look at the total costs and not assume that "commission free" offers necessarily mean the best deals, as many suppliers that do not charge these additional fees offer a poor exchange rate.

Holidaymakers are also advised to avoid buying euros, dollars or other overseas currency from airport exchange bureaus. Booking online and picking up at the airport typically offers a far better rate than simply turning up on the day to exchange sterling into other denominations.

"Regardless of how bad your credit scores are, people should know they have options," said Pryor. The site recommends debt consolidation loans to reduce bill payments and has helped thousands get money fast in emergency loans.

As the bills from holiday shopping start rolling in, officials are urging consumers to take the time to check annual credit reports to ensure the splurging was for their loved ones and not for the loved one of an identity thief.

A U.S. Department of Justice report recently released revealed that identity thieves are increasingly using personal information to rack up charging on existing credit cards of unsuspecting victims. According to the report, 8.6 million households had at least one member who experienced identity theft, compared to 6.4 million households in 2005. The report also revealed that victims lost an average of $5,650, compared to $2,800 in 2005.

"Part of the increase is because some feel that desperate times call for desperate measures in that some people turn to this crime just to keep their lights on," said Mike Prusinski, senior vice president of LifeLock, a national identity theft protection company. "I have heard from numerous law enforcement agents around the country talking about family members, taking advantage of family members and parents using the personal information of their children because they have fallen on hard times financially."

He said consumers should take a proactive approach to guarding their personal information against loved ones and criminals alike. Getting a paper shredder is an easy and affordable step that Prusinski said anyone can take.

"Shred everything," he said. "It used to be we just told people to shred financial documents, but now we need to shred everything because criminals have gotten so good at social engineering. They see an envelope from your bank, so they know what bank you use, then they go to public websites to find out even more information from tax returns, divorce agreements and mortgages, something of which could have your Social Security number, so then they go and apply for a loan or go into your bank and withdraw your money. It can happen that quickly, so people need to take steps now before it happens to them."

When you're upside down on your credit debt but you don't want to go to bankruptcy court, it's time to consider credit card debt settlement. This is an option that can get you out of much of your debt without the financial penalties of bankruptcy.

So what is debt settlement? It's a type of negotiation in which you and your creditors bargain over how much debt you'll repay. You agree to pay back a portion of the underlying balance, usually about 40 to 60 percent, and the creditors agree to release you from what's left.

Credit card debt settlement works best for people who find themselves stuck on the so-called "credit treadmill." This is when you've charged enough to build up an outstanding balance you can't pay off, leaving you stuck making the minimum monthly interest payments month after month with no end in sight. Consumers on the treadmill typically have two options: bankruptcy or debt settlement.

With the economy stalled and jobs hard to find, more and more consumers are stuck with monthly payments they can't afford. At the end of 2010, by illustration, the average American consumer owed $4,200 in debt. For many consumers, credit card debt settlement is the best possible way out of the hole. Not only does it give them a clean break, it doesn't typically do the kind of credit damage that bankruptcy does.

Creditors are also more open to debt settlement than ever before. The economy has already forced them to write off growing numbers of defaulted accounts, so they have little interest in seeing consumers go into Chapter 7 bankruptcy and liquidate their debts. In their ideal world, creditors would like to keep you stuck on the treadmill making monthly minimum payments, but given the choice between settlement and nothing, creditors will take settlement much more often than they used to.

Suphajee Suthumpun, chairman of both InTouch media and new business group and satellite and international business group, said recently that she has a lot of ideas about potential new businesses.

While she declined to specify them, she said that the new business must be able to synergise with the group's existing businesses, bringing in maximum benefit to the group, and generating new growth.

InTouch's executive committee chairman, Somprasong Boonyachai, has assigned Suphajee, who also serves as Thaicom's chief executive officer, to explore new business opportunities for the group.

InTouch's flagships include Thailand's largest cellular operator in terms of subscriber numbers Advanced Info Service, and satellite operator Thaicom.

InTouch is reportedly interested in exploring more telecom business opportunities in neighbouring countries.

The new emphasis on these add-on services reflects that credit card companies are searching for ways to squeeze more profit from their businesses. They're challenged by new regulations that tightened restrictions on fees and interest rates in recent years.

None of these products are new, but they are very profitable, said John Ulzheimer, president of consumer education for SmartCredit.com .

MOSCOW : The Russian rouble firmed at Friday's open, retaining support from month-end tax payments, and stocks indexes inched higher before the central bank interest rate meeting.

The central bank is expected to leave key interest rates unchanged and is expected to start easing monetary policy in the first quarter to prop up the economic growth.

The market is unlikely to react to an 'on-hold' decision, which is already priced in.

By 0626 GMT, the rouble firmed 0.2 percent to 31.29 versus the dollar, its strongest since Dec. 8 and had added 0.1 percent to 40.91 against the euro.

The rouble enjoys support from export-focused companies that convert foreign currencies to meet local month-end tax duties.

JERUSALEM (AP) " Israeli credit card companies say hackers claiming to be Saudis disclosed credit card information of thousands of Israelis on the Internet.

The companies, however, disputed the hackers' claims that 400,000 credit-card holders were affected. Isarel's central bank put the number at 15,000.

Visa CAL company spokeswoman Sagit Ofir says she cannot confirm Saudi hackers were responsible.

The Ynet news website says the hackers called the cyber attack a "gift to the world for the New Year" that they hoped "would hurt the Zionist pocket."

Ynet says the information was removed from an Israeli sports website shortly after it appeared.
