At 11 a.m. this Sunday, Jan. 8, at the Eureka Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Sandy Wright and Judi Selle, Brave Woman founding partners, will introduce listeners to their newly-organized grassroots movement to shift personal and public perception of women facing domestic violence situations from a victim mentality to one of courage and strength.

'End Times' series to start

An "End Times" series is set to begin at Lone Star Bible Church, beginning with the first session at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11, and continuing each Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Lanny Tanton, the teaching elder at the church, will be teaching on the subject of "End Times," a study of Daniel and Revelation.

The most obvious place to look for scholarships is online. Two of the most prominent web sites for finding scholarships are Fastweb, and Scholarships.com. You'll have to register, and give them quite a bit of information about yourself, but this is just how they personalize your scholarship search. By getting this information about you, they can find available scholarships that you would be most likely to qualify for. Another great thing about applying for scholarships online is that you can apply for several in a short period of time, which will increase your chances of winning one.

Many colleges offer scholarships of their own for students to attend their school, so if you haven't checked the college you're applying to, you should do so. Go to the school's web site and find the financial aid section. This is usually where you can find information on scholarships, and grants.

A number of businesses offer scholarships to local students as well. Ask your family members if their places of business offer any kind of scholarships that you might qualify for. If you have an after school job working for a well-known company ask your manager if they have a scholarship program. Numerous fast food restaurants have programs to help employees further their educations.

Another person you may not have considered talking to is your high school counselor. He's not just there to help you with your high school career. Counselors can be very helpful, because they have access to all your school records, so they know exactly which scholarships you would qualify for.
The best advice I can give you is to stay determined. It's not going to be easy to find, and win a scholarship. You're going to have to do some extensive searching. It's going to take a lot of hard work, and that doesn't even include all the essays you'll need to write, so stay focused, and remind yourself frequently how important this is.

The good news is that the tax credit for installing high efficiency equipment in residential property has been extended another year. The bad news is that the program has been dramatically reduced from $1,500 bucks to a mere $500. Uncle Sam is still willing to help homeowners hoping to improve their indoor air quality, but it's going to be a little harder. The new 2011 tax credits now have maximum amounts that can be claimed for the various components of the HVAC systems, such as a $150 maximum credit for a 95% gas furnace and $300 for an air conditioner or heat pump.

Here's a quick guide to help you get up to speed with the new program:

The general provision is that you can receive a credit of up to 10% of the installed cost or up to $500.00.

Air Conditioners: you can expect a credit of 10% of the installed cost, $300 maximum on split systems: 16 SEER and 13 EER and package systems of 14 SEER and 12 EER

Furnaces and Boilers: under the new 2011 Tax Credit you can expect a credit of 10% of the installed cost, $150 maximum on Gas Furnaces, 95 AFUE, Oil Furnaces, 95 AFUE and Boilers, 95 AFUE

In the competition for new loan customers, New Haven-based UIL Holdings sees an opportunity to further market its natural-gas heating business.

UIL announced last week it is jointly marketing a personal loan product of Bridgeport-based People's United Bank to help people convert to natural gas.

"We are pleased to work with People's United Bank to help consumers who want to reduce their home heating costs by converting from oil to natural gas at a time when homeowners are looking at every aspect of their household expenses," Tony Marone , vice president of Business Services for UIL Holdings, said in the press release. "Energy costs related to home heating can be the largest part of a family's budget. The affinity financing program can allow them to include the cost of conversion in their budgets, and in many cases, the savings from conversion to natural gas will pay for the cost of financing."

In November 2010, UIL closed on a $1.25 billion deal that included the acquisition of Southern Connecticut Gas and Connecticut Natural Gas from Spain's Iberdrola. While the deal has helped UIL boost revenue, executives told analysts in May there is tremendous opportunity to expand the business as only 37 percent of homes connected to SCG and CNG mains use gas to heat their homes.

One issue confronting UIL's push to expand its customer base is the cost of converting homes to natural gas. Estimates from several companies listed as installers ran from $7,000 to more $10,000. Several variables impact the cost of the conversion, but an economy with high unemployment and stagnant wage growth isn't helping, despite a potential savings in heating costs.

Color can be a powerful tool for stationery design and business branding. Envelopes will stand out with the use of color, but only if it is used effectively. After several tumultuous weeks, including a scandal that cost the legendary coach his job, and an injury that landed Joe Paterno in the hospital, alumni and fans across the country mailed thousands of cards for his 85th birthday.

Mary Kay Hort told 6News that outpouring of support has raised her fathers spirit in a difficult time and joked that mail carriers have stopped using the mailbox and now bring large boxes full of cards to the front door.

"This has been such an emotional time for a lot of people. I think people want to do what makes them happy and what makes them continue to be part of this, it’s good. I would never say not to send a card," said Hort. "My mom's like, just get the bills out, and then we'll open the cards. He's been reading a lot of them, which has been really great. We're going to try and get most of them of them open this weekend while my nieces and nephews are here."

Hort said Paterno has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home, after a fall inside his McKee street home led to a pelvis fracture.

"He'll be using a walker. They don't him to put weight on it yet, so he's still getting around. It is what it is. You've got to deal with what life gives you. His attitude has always been; when something happens, he doesn't dwell on it. He deals with it," said Hort.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill . (AP) " Illinois , unable to solve its long-running financial problems, was given the lowest credit rating of any state in the country by Moody's Investors Service on Friday, a move that will increase costs to taxpayers.

A second agency, Standard Poor's, left its Illinois rating unchanged but warned of a negative outlook that could lead to a downgrade in the future. A day earlier, Fitch Ratings also left the rating unchanged and declared a stable outlook.

Lower credit ratings generally mean the state winds up paying more interest when it borrows money by selling bonds.

Both Moody's and SP said they are troubled by Illinois' failure to balance its budget and strengthen government pension systems, although a tax increase and other measures have helped.

Moody's cited "weak management practices" and a recent legislative session that "took no steps to implement lasting solutions."

If you are a college student or prospective college student today, finding grant and scholarship money to offset the cost of your education is likely high on your list of priorities. College is a growing expense that most students cannot afford without a little help. Fortunately, if you take the time to look, there are grants and scholarships to help groups of people who are deserving of extra assistance. For instance, women may qualify for grant opportunities that encourage female students to pursue their education and career goals.

It was not long ago that colleges were male-dominated institutions. Women were expected to fulfill traditional roles in the home, and for many women, college was not an option. This situation has since been altered to the point where women comprise over half of college students in the United States today. One major organization that promotes women's scholarship is the American Association of University Women, or AAUW. The organization especially supports students entering fields underrepresented by women. In addition, the organization seeks to support minority women in impoverished financial circumstances.

If you are a woman who has experienced domestic abuse, there are organizations to help you turn your life around and get the education you need. The Sunshine Lady Foundation provides grants and scholarships for women who have been the victims of abuse, helping them to achieve independence through education. The R.O.S.E. Fund, which stands for Regaining One's Self-Esteem, also offers scholarships to victims of domestic violence who are seeking better lives.

If you are a black woman, you have many resources available to you in your pursuit of education. There are many grants made available by organizations that exist in support of black women who are experiencing financial difficulties. For example, Black Women in Sisterhood for Action, or BISA, provides assistance for urban-dwelling black women living in tough economic circumstances.
