Gov. Paul LePage on Wednesday told a crowd of 100 people that a Forbes representative told his office the state must cut spending, reduce energy costs and address structural problems " which LePage interpreted as "welfare" " or the state would continue to be "in the cellar" of the magazine's rankings of the best states for business.

Forbes says it told the governor's office no such thing.

"I certainly didn't say anything about welfare costs, which has nothing to do with the ranking that we do," said Forbes senior editor Kurt Badenhausen, who spoke to the governor's office when it called the magazine. "I didn't tell them they needed to reduce energy costs. I told them, basically, the best thing they could do, and that any local government could do, was just to try and create more jobs."

A memo sent last week to LePage from his senior economic policy adviser backs up Badenhausen's version.

Badenhausen, who worked for more than three years at Financial World magazine before joining Forbes in 1998 as part of the statistics department, is the editor responsible for Forbes' business school rankings, the America's Best Small Companies list and the annual Best Places for Business rankings. He confirmed he spoke with someone from the governor's office recently, but he adamantly denied telling anyone that Maine must reduce energy costs and spending if it wants to improve in the ranking. Welfare, he said, isn't considered in Forbes' rankings and Maine isn't alone in its energy costs.

Dear Opening Credits,
I am opening a sole proprietorship to run in my home. I will be owner/operator with no employees. The plan is to purchase all my business equipment over the next few years while I work my full-time day job. The business costs of getting up and fully running should be around $12,000. I want to find a small business credit card to purchase my items that I can quickly pay back, while keeping these expenses separate than my normal household everyday items. I guess the point of the question is, are there any small business cards available, like only a $5,000 limit, that I can apply for without my business, per se, having any past reportable income. The downtown branch of the TVA Employees Credit Union hardly seems like the staging ground for an insurrection. It's a spacious, quiet place in a building just down Wall Avenue from the concrete TVA towers. There's a Christmas window display for Mission of Hope full of teddy bears and Barbie dolls, and inside you can find cheerful tellers and a complimentary carafe of coffee on a table near the door.

But in recent months, placid financial facilities like this one have become rallying points for hundreds of thousands of people disaffected with American banking and corporate profiteering in general. Credit unions"nonprofit, member-owned cooperatives that specialize in small-scale checking, savings, and lending"have been touted as a populist alternative to the Bank of Americas and Citicorps of the world.

Last month, a Los Angeles art-gallery owner started a Facebook frenzy with a campaign called Bank Transfer Day, encouraging people to close their accounts at commercial banks on Nov. 5 and move the money into local credit unions. The Credit Union National Association, a trade group representing about 90 percent of the country's credit unions, estimates that 40,000 people did just that. That capped a swell that started at the end of September, when many banks (including Regions and SunTrust, in Knoxville) announced new monthly fees of $4 or $5 for debit-card users.

The banks were reacting to limits on their charges to retailers included in financial reforms passed by Congress, but outraged customers"who have seen a steady increase in financial fees of various kinds"responded by taking their business elsewhere. CUNA says more than 650,000 people nationwide opened credit union accounts in the following weeks, more new members than credit unions saw in all of 2010. Even though the biggest banks quickly dropped their new fees, the damage was done, and credit unions had enjoyed an unusual burst of publicity.

Some of that momentum carried over locally. Glenn Siler, CEO of the Knoxville-based TVA Employees union, says there was a moderate bump in new memberships over the last few months. Originally open, as its name suggests, only to local TVA workers, the institution has had a community charter for about the last 10 years. That means membership is available to anyone who lives, works, attends school, or worships in eight local counties: Blount, Jefferson, Loudon, Sevier, Hamblen, Knox, Roane and Sullivan. To join, you just have to deposit $5 in an account.

The true cost of lending to short-term borrowers is less than 2% of the amount charged by Wonga, the most expensive and highest profile payday lender.

My Home Finance , a not-for-profit organisation set up by the government and the National Housing Federation in 2010, charges a representative APR of 69.9%, just 1.66% of the 4,214% APR charged by online lender Wonga.

Figures provided by the firms' own websites show that it would be cheaper to borrow 300 from My Home Finance for a whole year, than from Wonga for a month.

The contrast in charges is all the more shocking following the revelation by insolvency trade body R3 that up to 3.5 million people are considering taking out a payday loan over the next six months.

Payday loans " the lenders generally prefer to refer to them as short-term or microloans " are designed to tide borrowers over until their next pay cheque. The money is usually provided very quickly " Wonga boasts that it can pay cash into your account within 15 minutes of a loan being approved " and paid back within a month or two.

SEBASTIAN " Sebastian's VFW Post 10210 is one of four December finalists for the Home Depot Foundation "Aprons in Action" award and they're looking for the community's help to win $25,000.

The Post qualified for the program based on a project completed by 15 employees from the Sebastian Home Depot store. In September, Team Depot volunteers created a 40-square-foot walkway to the post's war memorial monument, landscaped and installed solar lighting. The Home Depot Foundation selected VFW Post 10210 as a December finalist.

By being selected to compete, each nonprofit organization receives $5,000. Votes from the public during December will decide which group receives $25,000 more to complete another project with Team Depot volunteers. Eleven winners will be selected for $25,000 each.

In March 2012, Facebook fans will have the chance to help one of those 11 winners win the $250,000 grand prize. The organization that receives the second and third most votes will receive $150,000 and $100,000 from The Home Depot respectively.

VFW Post 10210 Cmdr. Jack Willis said the award will help renovate the Post's headquarters in Sebastian, which is in dire need of repair.

These days wherein the economy is as shady as a weather report, you never know if you are going to survive on your desk job or lose it the next day. Simon talks about the importance of diversifying your writing experience to give you a safety net whenever another economic crisis arises.

So how do you exactly diversify your writing experience? Companies out there are high on the look out for potential employees who can deliver a wide variety of output. Just like any job out there, you need to develop more skills and knowledge under your field to make yourself competitive and indispensable. Take time out to discover more of what you could do and what you could deliver - whether it is an editorial, blogging, or part of advertising and marketing. Just make sure that you have passion and interest in it because it would show in your job performance and work output.

As what Simon said out of her experience, there would be times wherein you would have to put on leg in and one leg out of the door in your day job during times of economic crisis. You never know when you would still be working full time or start on the road to freelance. It never hurts to start practicing what you have never done before. For example, if you work on an advice column on a newspaper you can actually start creating a blog about it or come up with webinars teaching what you know to people who would pay you for your knowledge and expertise.

According to Simon, desk jobs nowadays are contracting as home-based jobs and businesses are booming especially on the travel writing industry. This has created a lot of freelance opportunities, which is to say that the more diversified your CV or portfolio is, the more you can expect that people from all over the world can find you online and pay you for what you can do.

It’s about time that, as a short-term or long-term decision, to make the transition from the usual office job to setting up your own office at home. We may begin to see the future of how our world will be - wherein everyone sets their own time and work in their own pace and creating a living out of the opportunities presented to us by the World Wide Web.

Prospective college students should never underestimate the value of scholarships in helping to pay for a costly education. While scholarships will not usually cover the entire cost of your education, these awards can be a big help if you are experiencing financial need. They are available to benefit almost any kind of student with diverse backgrounds, talents, and goals. If you are a black student in the United States seeking scholarships to help further your educational opportunities, you have many resources to turn to for funding.

Many organizations offer scholarships that help to support minority students as they pursue their educational goals. Many black students in the United States face economic hardship and poor educational opportunities. Scholarships help to put college within reach of bright and talented black students who might not otherwise be able to afford higher education.

One such important organization is the United Negro College Fund, or UNCF. Since their inception in 1985, UNCF has awarded hundreds of millions of scholarship dollars to deserving students across the country. They recognize that even for determined and ambitious college students, college may be financially out of reach due to rising costs of education. UNFC works hard to make college a possibility for black students. The organization also helps students during and after college by offering internship opportunities, leadership programs, and other career development services.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, is another well-known and prestigious organization with quite a history. This group actively promotes and protects social justice for blacks. NAACP also works to promote educational opportunities as well as career advancement for black people in the United States. They offer several grant and scholarship opportunities each year for deserving students who meet requirements for merit, financial need, or proposed areas of study.

There are many scholarship groups to promote minority representation in various fields. For example, if you are a black student interested in engineering, there are a couple of groups offering scholarships to promote minority students in engineering. The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, or NACME, awards funding to students who meet specific academic, leadership, community service, and need-based criteria. The National Society of Black Engineers is a student-run organization that offers scholarship opportunities in addition to information and resources related to their cause of promoting blacks in engineering.

On Wednesday, December 7, Diamond’s Vice President of Lending, Lori Levengood, and Debt Counseling Manager, Paul Schwab, presented the topic "Credit, Credit Scores, and Not Paying." They shared a presentation and answered questions about the value of a good credit score and the repercussions of not repaying debts.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to once again partner with the Pottstown School District. Knowing how to balance your personal finances is a life skill that is even more important in current economic conditions. We’re happy to illustrate the real life applications of what the students are learning in class and feel privileged to be able to add to the depth of their understanding of personal finance topics," said Todd Rothenberger, Vice President of Marketing at Diamond Credit Union.

During previous visits to the class, representatives discussed the topics of "Budgeting," "How a Financial Institution Works," and "The Difference Between Banks and Credit Unions." Diamond is also scheduled to visit the class in January to discuss protection from identity theft.

Diamond Credit Union is the 18th largest credit union in Pennsylvania and is headquartered in Pottstown, with two additional offices in Reading. Diamond serves Berks County and the TriCounty Region and holds more than $372 million in assets with over 40,000 members.
