For a system in a budget crisis, any extra money seems like a dream. But this money came with a few caveats.

It was part of the one-time $400 million Race to the Top grant that North Carolina won for its plan to change schools. The stimulus money was split, with $200 million going to the state Department of Public Instruction and $200 million being spread among the state's school districts.

To meet the Race to the Top standards, the funds had to be spread out over four years, and they had to be used for education reform.

Brunswick County Schools was awarded almost $1.6 million, and Pender County Schools got about $670,000.

Midway through the 2011-12 school year, New Hanover County is using its share to train teachers and improve technology throughout the system.

Funding for these grants came from dinner theater ticket sales, membership donations and grants from local banks.
