Effort aimed at District 7 students in need

A group of new members of the Edwardsville Rotary Club havejoined together in a community service project that they hope will"fill a gap" within the needs of the community. The first-yearRotarians are organizing a Winter Wear Drive to collect hats, gloves and scarves which will benefit District 7 school children inneed who are in grades K-12.

"Our Rotary Club has, over the past year, had a nice growth inmembership and we have a terrific group of first year Rotarians. They came together on a project, with the idea led by Karla Lilley, that they would like to do a service project but they wanted tostart with something local. One suggestion was to start with thekids," Brian Mulhall, the New Generations Director for the clubsaid.

Lilley had discussions with Edwardsville District 7Superintendent Ed Hightower and other Hadley House administratorsto identify needs.

"I approached him with 'Let's fill a gap' - where is a gap thatwe can assist in," Lilley said.

Although there were several areas identified that theorganization could assist with, the Rotarians ultimately decidedthat providing hats, gloves and scarves was the most immediate needand one that they could meet quickly.

"What they said was that we make sure every kid has a coat, butthe biggest problem we have is we don't have kids with hats, gloves, scarves - they don't have any winter wear to go along withthat. So you have a kid that comes to school - it's 10 degreesoutside - who has a coat but they don't have a hat or gloves on.And that can be pretty serious. That's where the idea spawned forthe winter wear versus the winter coat drive to kind of fill in,"Lilley said.

The Rotarians have placed their Winter Wear Drive collectionboxes of various sizes throughout the community for those wishingto donate new or clean, gently used hats, gloves and scarves.

Collection boxes are located at: Market Basket (Edwardsvillelocation); Regions Bank locations at Route 157 and at Cottonwood;Bank of Edwardsville locations of Route 159 in Glen Carbon and the330 W. The collection boxes come in three sizes - small (aboutthe size of a paper ream box) to large which is the size of a smallappliance.

Realizing that many people would like to help, but may not havechildren's winter clothing items around the house to donate or mayhave no interest in shopping for the items, monetary donations tothe cause are welcome.
